The last week of February and first week of March was always Dr. Seuss time as a teacher in celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday. Kade is still a little young to sit through a lot of his books because though they are SO fun and entertaining, they can be a bit lengthy! I pulled out a couple favorites and we read as much as we could of them together before the attention span ended. ;) One of the few we read was One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and we did a few activities to go with it.

Here are the activities we did:

This activity is pretty self-explanatory! When we do these do-a-dot activities, I show Kade the circles on the paper before hand and encourage him to try and stamp right on the circles. The main challenge for him this time was keeping the red stamper on only the red fish and the blue only on the blue fish.

Red Fish Blue Fish Color Sorting Printable - Oh Hey Let's Play www.ohheyletsplay.com.png

You can use any red and blue objects for color sorting with this printable but we chose pom poms because we loovvve them. I added some fine motor tweezers for added fine motor practice though this concept is still pretty challenging for Kade. I was so proud of him for trying his hardest to use them this time and it was so fun watching him get closer to figuring it out. He mostly used his hands to sort the poms which is fine too. I laminated this mat so that I can keep it and use it again next year but you definitely don't need to. You could always slide it in a plastic sheet cover/page protector to make it last a little longer, too.

Red Fish Blue Fish Paper Plate Art - Oh Hey Let's Play www.ohheyletsplay.com.png

No printable for this one, but here are the materials you'll need:
- Paper plates
- Red & blue paint
- Loofah (or whatever you choose to use as your "paint brush" - ps I definitely had to google the correct spelling of the word "loofah")
- Craft sticks
- Tape
- Glue
- Scissors
- Large googly eyes

I put some paint on a small paper plate and showed Kade how to dip the loofah in the paint and dab it onto the bigger plate. There was a bit of hand over hand with this project because he kept wanting to hold the loofah by the loop attached to it which wasn't as effective. We did the blue one first and then repeated the process for the red plate. We used a different loofah so we didn't have to rinse in between.

Thankfully, these dried pretty quickly so I was able to quickly cut a triangle shape out for a mouth and use the cut-out to attach to the back as a tail/fin. I attached it using tape to be sure it would stay. I put a dot of glue on each plate and let Kade put the big googly eyes on. I taped a craft stick to the back of each fish and let Kade "swim them" around the house!

1 fish, 2 fish Counting Mat Printable - Oh Hey Let's Play www.ohheyletsplay.com.png

Last, but not least, we did a little counting during snack time! I put some colored goldfish crackers in a bowl, and I encouraged Kade to put them in the fish bowls to cover each of the fish as he ate them. Though he did most of the eating, and I did most of the counting, it was still a learning experience by introducing him to one-to-one correspondence covering the fishes in the bowls, and having him hear and watch me count out the fish.

In my little activity pack of printables, there is a second counting mat that doesn't have the fish in the bowls, just the numbers 1-6. I felt that the guide would be useful for those working on one-to-one correspondence or younger kiddos who are just learning to count and need the visual but wanted to include a blank one as well.
